Chapter 12: Atoms and Elements
NGSS (Science Standard Addressed)
- PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter
Big Ideas
- The atom is the smallest unit of an element that still can be identified as that element
- The atom is made up of the same number of all three subatomic particles- the proton, electron, and neutron
- The nucleus is made up of protons and neutrons
- Electrons orbit the nucleus at very fast speeds
- Every element has an atomic number. That number represents the number of protons in an atom
- An element is a substance made up of only one kind of atom. Compounds are made up of a combination of different atoms
- Our air is made up of several gasses. Nitrogen makes up about 78% of our air
- The four states of matter are solid, liquid, gas, and Plasma
- All elements can exist in the solid, liquid, or gaseous form. It all depends on temperature
