Chapter 13: Matter and How It Changes
NGSS (Science Standard Addressed)
- PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter
- PS1.B: Chemical Reactions
Big Ideas
- Be able to compare and contrast physical and chemical properties and physical and chemical changes
- A physical property describes something (color, shape, texture, size, temperature, etc.)
- A physical change is when something changes but keeps its original properties
- A chemical property is the ability of something to react with something else and make a new material
- A chemical change is when something changes into something new
- Be able to distinguish between the different types of mixtures
- A solution is a mixture where everything is evenly distributed
- A colloid is a mixture with particles too small to see
- A suspension is a mixture with particles large enough to be seen
- An emulsion is a mixture of two liquids that do not mix
