Chapter 7: Earth's Rocks
NGSS (Science Standard Addressed)
- ESS2.A: Earth's Materials and Systems
Big Ideas (the end of the chapter quiz will include these concepts and the vocabulary)
- Scientists identify minerals by using many properties. Among these are streak, fluorescence, crystal structure, cleavage, and hardness
- Moh's Hardness Scale rates minerals from 1 (softest) to 10 (hardest)
- Igneous rock is formed when molten rock hardens
- Sedimentary rock forms when layers of sediment settle over time and bind together
- Metamorphic rock is made from igneous or sedimentary rock that has been changed by pressure and high temperature
- Any kind of rock can change into any other kind of rock
- Unlike the water cycle, the rock cycle is a very slow process
